Glenthompson

For a town of just a couple of hundred residents, Glenthompson’s foundations are as solid as the Glenthompson bricks that have built much of the town. The deep duplex clay has fed the local brickworks in Glenthompson for well
more than a century. This is one of the very few brickworks in Australia that still produces solid clay bricks.

Visitors can tour the Glen brickworks – only on a Thursday – by making an appointment. The works are a fascinating example of an ancient trade that continues to serve modern society.

Glenthompson received an enormous boost after the Second World War, as thousands of soldiers took up parcels of land that had been purchased from the nearby sheep stations.

On the Glenelg Highway towards Dunkeld you will find the Grampians Pure Sheep Dairy. This innovative diversification from the traditional wool and meat produced by most farmers has yielded some of the finest boutique yoghurts and cheeses in Australia. All products are made on the farm in a small factory, where tourists are welcome to learn how the products are made.

For gardeners the Toora West garden near Glenthompson is well worth a look.
